Tourism is a very important part of the economies of many countries and regions around the world and is worth over one trillion dollars in revenue annually. This course takes you through the history of the travel industry, from the development of roads and water craft in the ancient Egyptian and Roman empires, through the development of travel agencies and transport, up to current online travel services.

The course teaches you about the rise of the modern tourism industry. You will learn how during the Industrial Revolution, workers started receiving annual holidays and the first seaside resorts were developed in Europe and the USA; construction of the vast railway networks during the 18th and 19th centuries made business and leisure travel more widespread; More recently, in the early to mid-20th century, the popularization of the motor car, led to hotels (motels) and services popping up all across nations, and following the second world war, the development of commercial air travel reduced travel times further.

Finally, the course covers the skills, experience and qualifications required for various occupations in the travel industry: professional, technical, administrative and manual. You will study the importance of marketing and promotion, as used by tourist boards, wholesalers and travel agents and how to develop and attract customers.
