Educational Psychology

Course Level 3: Advanced

Estimated Study Time: 15-20 hours

Offered by: Alison

This course introduces you to key development theories related to the learning process and provides a framework for teachers and trainers to plan, create and deliver effective lessons, and to assess each student’s learning.

The course begins by differentiating between teaching and learning, and covers two major learning theories: behaviorism and constructivism. Behaviorism reviews operant conditioning and its implications for teaching in detail, whereas Constructivism compares and contrasts two subtypes of constructivism, namely, psychological constructivism and social constructivism.

Next, the course describes the most frequent disabilities encountered in the classroom: learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disabilities, behavioral disorders, and physical disabilities and sensory impairments.

The course then explains why working with students with these special educational needs requires specific skills and strategies to create and deliver effective programs. Finally, the course reviews student development and diversity and explains in more detail two core elements of student diversity: gender and culture.
